Living Aboard and Leaving It All Behind: Dream or Challenge?
Living aboard a boat and leaving behind the routines and comforts of life on land can be wonderful—and also a unique challenge. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits and challenges of this lifestyle that so many people dream of. Also, we’ll suggest an intermediate option that lets you try it out for a few days and help you decide if it’s for you. Ready to dive in?
The Benefits of Life at Sea
For those who long for freedom and adventure, living on a boat is the ultimate expression of independence. Waking up to a new view each day, staying connected to nature, and escaping the noise of the city are just a few of the perks that make this lifestyle so appealing.
To get a deeper understanding of this big decision, we spoke with Estefanía, captain and hospitality manager aboard Mon-Toi, a boutique hotel that allows guests to experience life at sea through the Navegando Sueños project. Estefi shared her story with us: “A few years ago, my partner and I decided to make our dream come true and live aboard. At first, we went back and forth on the idea, but once we were sure, we started preparing our kids, who now live in Buenos Aires. We wanted to wait until our youngest daughter finished school before setting sail.”
When asked about how their daily life changed, she told us: “Our routine was completely different. We were now sailing around the world, constantly surrounded by nature, waking up to breathtaking views, and enjoying this lifestyle both together and with the people we met.”

One of the most obvious benefits, and something Estefanía emphasized, is the improvement in quality of life. Being surrounded by the sea and breathing in fresh air allows for a slower, more relaxed pace of life. There’s no traffic, there’s daily contact with the water, and there are countless opportunities for watersports like fishing and diving—all of which promote both physical and mental well-being.
Another major perk is the reduced cost of living. While the initial investment in a sailboat or catamaran can be high, ongoing expenses are often lower than those of a traditional home. There are no electricity or gas bills, and consumption becomes much more mindful. Plus, the ability to move freely means you can explore the world without being tied down.
The Challenges of Living at Sea
Despite its many advantages, life at sea isn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest adjustments is adapting to limited space. No matter how comfortable your boat may be, it won’t offer the same room or amenities as a house on land. Staying organized and maximizing space is essential to maintaining comfort and order.
Another key challenge is the constant need for maintenance. Exposure to the elements, salt, and humidity can cause technical issues that need regular attention. This means you’ll either need to learn basic repair skills or be ready to hire professionals.
Connectivity can also be tricky. While satellite internet and other solutions exist, the connection isn’t always reliable, which can complicate remote work and staying in touch with friends and family.
A Life-Changing Decision with a Positive Impact
People who choose to live on a boat often say their quality of life improves dramatically. Being close to nature, reducing stress, and embracing a minimalist lifestyle all contribute to a powerful sense of well-being.
This way of life also encourages letting go of material things. With limited space, you learn to value the essentials and do away with the unnecessary. It’s a change that affects not just your belongings but your mindset and how you relate to the world.
In addition, connecting with different cultures and marine communities enriches the experience. Traveling from port to port introduces you to others living similarly and creates opportunities to share knowledge and stories.
